Frequently Asked Questions

How long does FINRA registration take?

The FINRA membership application process is thorough by design, and timelines can vary depending on the complexity of your firm’s business model and the completeness of your application. In general, the process can take anywhere from three to six months from the approval of the initial submission to receiving approval. FINRA’s review includes an in-depth assessment of your business plan, financial condition, supervisory structure, and the qualifications of your principals, and involves multiple rounds of information requests before approval is granted.

What does an NMA engagement cost?

Engagement cost depends on your business model, the number of registered principals, and the scope of the compliance program required. We provide a fixed quote after an initial consultation, at no charge.

What are the most common reasons applications get rejected or delayed?

Most delays trace back to a small number of recurring issues: a business plan that does not align with the activities described on the Form BD, supervisory procedures written generically rather than for the firm’s actual business model, financial projections that do not support the proposed net capital requirement, incomplete or inconsistent disclosure on the principals’ Forms U4, and slow or partial responses to FINRA’s information requests. FINRA’s review involves multiple rounds of questions, and every incomplete response extends the timeline. Preparing a complete, well-documented application at the outset is the single biggest lever on how quickly you reach approval.

What will you need from us during the process?

Less than most firms expect. We need a clear picture of your intended business model and ownership structure, the background and licensing history of your proposed principals, and your funding position. From there we draft the business plan, first-year budget, written supervisory procedures, and AML program and bring them to you for review, rather than asking you to write them. Your main commitment is reviewing those drafts and preparing for the membership interview, which we run practice sessions for. We handle the FINRA correspondence throughout.

Do you support us after we're approved?

Yes. DFP Partners provides ongoing regulatory support via on-site visits, off-site accessibility, and informed guidance, including procedures updates, annual reviews, advertising review, regulatory exam support, and supervisory controls testing.

Can you help if we've already filed or received FINRA comments?

Yes. We regularly take over applications already in progress, including those that have received substantive FINRA comment letters or been through several rounds of information requests. We will review what has been filed, identify what is driving the comments, and manage the responses from that point forward. If you are working against a response deadline, call (212) 751-4422 rather than using the form.
